A loan move for next season may be the best move for a young Manchester City centre-back

Max Alleyne has almost become the forgotten defender in Manchester City’s squad. The young centre-back was recalled by City in January from Watford, where he had impressed on loan during the first half of this season. Alleyne returned to City when injuries decimated Manchester City’s defense in January. The young defender made seven appearances for City after he returned to the club, and Alleyne showed more than enough to suggest that he has all the makings of a quality centre-back.

Unfortunately for Max Alleyne, he has been starved of opportunities to play for City due to Manchester City’s signing of Marc Guehi and the return of players from injury. Looking further ahead, it is hard to see where Max Alleyne fits into the City squad for next season. Perhaps another loan move is the next logical step in his young career.

It is difficult to find a fit for Max Alleyne in the Manchester City squad when looking ahead to next season.

Looking ahead to what the Manchester City squad may look like for next season, one position that City don’t lack options in is at centre-back. It is likely that Pep Guardiola’s squad will contain Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Josko Gvardiol. All four of those players are exceptional centre-backs. A safe bet would also be that Vitor Reis will return to Manchester City and be the fifth centre-back in the City squad. If that turns out to be the case, it is hard to see where Max Alleyne will fit into the Manchester City first team for next season.

It isn’t a knock on Max Alleyne’s talent to suggest that he would be the sixth centre-back in the City squad for next season if he remains at the club. It is just the reality of the situation that Alleyne would be facing next season. Competition for spots in the heart of the Manchester City defence will be fierce next season. Alleyne will face a battle to play any meaningful minutes at City next season. That is clear to see this season already. At 20 years of age, Alleyne needs to be playing at a high level to further develop as a player. Spending a season on the periphery of the City first team likely won’t do the gifted young defender any good.

A loan move to a Premier League club is probably the best move for Max Alleyne.

Max Alleyne showed at Watford earlier this season and at Manchester City when he returned from his loan spell in the Championship that he is more than capable of playing at the highest level. Perhaps a loan move to another Championship club for next season could be on the cards for Alleyne. However, he does look ready to play in the Premier League on a consistent basis.

A loan move for the 2026/27 season to a Premier League club could be the ideal setting for Max Alleyne to take the next step as a player. He has shown enough to suggest that he is capable of being a consistent Premier League player. He just needs an opportunity to do so. It is likely that opportunity won’t come at Manchester City next season. Perhaps another Premier League club will take a chance on Alleyne and give him the opportunity to play at the highest level.

A loan move for the 2026/27 season looks to be the logical move for Max Alleyne next season. The young centre-back needs to play to continue his growth and development as a defender. Hopefully, a Premier League takes a chance on Max Alleyne for next season so he show what he is capable of at the elite level of English football.

A Spanish journalist has been detailing the perfect example of why Chelsea’s recruitment strategy is ‘simply ridiculous.’

And to be honest, he is not wrong here either.

Pablo Espinosa San Mauroc, who contributes for Radio Marca and Diario AS in Spain, posted on his X account last night whilst watching the Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich game in the Champions League.

He was watching Michael Olise ball out for Bayern once again and of course, we as Chelsea fans know fully well that he is a player that we should have signed when we had a really good chance to. We came so close, but fumbled it.

Example of failed strategy

Pablo posted on his X account last night:

“Instead of Olise, Chelsea ended up signing Pedro Neto (who still seemed like a good signing to me), Joao Félix, and Sancho. The following summer, Garnacho and Jaime Gittens arrived.

“In total, they cost 220 million. Olise, 54M. No matter how high a salary the Frenchman demanded, this is the perfect example to highlight that Chelsea’s strategy, so focused on signing young players with low salaries, is sometimes simply ridiculous.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

In other news today…

Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer has been speaking about Chelsea’s test against Man City this weekend and his own level of preparation. He’s also been speaking about his own form of late.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are closing on a deal to sign Valentin Barco from Strasbourg this summer, and it is Liam Rosenior who has apparently played a key role in convincing the player to join.

Liverpool travel to Paris tonight, aiming to rescue their season with a professional away result against the defending European champions.

The Reds reached the quarter-finals after a convincing 4-1 aggregate win over Galatasaray. Slot, however, oversaw a difficult domestic weekend before turning his attention to Paris. Despite that disruption, he remains optimistic as his side returns to the scene of last season’s shootout defeat.

Both clubs have recorded three wins each in their previous six meetings, underlining just how evenly matched this tie promises to be. Liverpool have won six of their last eight quarter-final ties. That record, combined with the experience running through Slot’s squad, gives the Reds genuine reason to believe they can cause an upset at the Parc des Princes tonight.

Liverpool team news

Slot receives a timely boost in the forward line heading into the tie. Alexander Isak returns to the matchday squad after four months out with an ankle fracture, though he is expected to feature from the bench as he builds up his match fitness. There is less positive news between the posts, however.

Alisson Becker remains sidelined with a hamstring issue, ensuring Giorgi Mamardashvili continues in goal. New additions Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké are both set to start, with the latter facing his former club for the first time — an intriguing subplot to an already compelling evening.

At full-back, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez will provide the energy needed to combat PSG’s pacey wingers. In midfield, meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister provide the platform for Dominik Szoboszlai to influence proceedings further forward. Out wide, Mohamed Salah starts on the right, aiming to add to his European tally after a frustrating domestic outing on Saturday.

Oilers lose to motivated Mammoth in possible playoff preview

As it turns out, in a game the Edmonton Oilers led for all but 11 seconds, they were lucky to escape Salt Lake City with a point in a 6-5 overtime loss.

Did the Oilers hold leads of 3-1, 4-3 and (with seven minutes to play) 5-4? Yes they did.

Bur were they absolutely on their heels, pinned in their defensive zone for most of the third period, while the Utah Mammoth possessed the puck in Edmonton’s zone? You bet they were.

“We obviously gave up too many chances,” said defenceman Darnell Nurse. “When you’re trying to score six to win a game, it’s tough to get that done. So defensively, we can definitely up the details in our own zone.”

Two days after Connor McDavid talked about playing low-event hockey against the offensively talented Mammoth, this game was anything but, with the Mammoth logging 12 high danger chances to Edmonton’s eight.

In what could be a preview of a riveting Round 1 matchup between these teams, it was Utah that controlled the pace in the third period, while Edmonton was hanging on for dear life.

The good news? The Oilers managed to score five times with both Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman out of the lineup, and they received depth goals from Colton Dach and Curtis Lazar.

“It was nice to see the offence was there. We had the goals, but just too many chances against,” lamented head coach Kris Knoblauch, whose team just couldn’t break the puck out of their own zone with any consistency. “So many problems tonight started with just not being able to get the puck up ice and having to spend time in the defensive zone.

“If we get those breakouts, we’re out of the zone. We’re also not tired and getting run down in our zone. For me, that’s the starting point.”

The point leaves Edmonton exactly where they were when the night began: tied atop the Pacific and holding the tie-breaker, but with Vegas now, not Anaheim. With four games to play, the Pacific is wide open, with Anaheim losing 5-0 at home to Nashville Tuesday, while Vegas beat the moribund Vancouver Canucks 2-1, surrendering just 11 shots on goal.

Mammoth Opportunity

The franchise shift to Utah from Arizona has been one of Gary Bettman’s great recoveries. After Bettman held his faith in a series of bad owners who left unpaid bills scattered across the desert, Utah owner Ryan Smith is as solid as solid can be in Salt Lake City — and his up-and-coming hockey team looks to be no different.

The Mammoth have become an exciting offensive machine, scoring six or more goals in each of their last four games. They’ve posted an 8-1-1 road record since March 1.

Slight problem though — Utah dragged a 1-5-1 home record since March 1 into Edmonton’s visit, and the Mammoth play five of their final six games at the Delta Center as they cling to a wild card spot and this franchise’s first playoff berth since the 2020 bubble.

If the Mammoth can qualify for the post-season this spring — they control their own destiny and have the first wild card spot all but wrapped up out West — it will be just the second time in 13 years that this franchise played past Game 82, after a lot of bad years in the Arizona desert.

McFeelin’ It

How good was Connor McDavid on a Tuesday night in Salt Lake City? Oh boy…

He walked through the whole Mammoth penalty kill for this goal, a work of art for his 44th of the season.

After Nikita Kucherov pulled one point ahead in the Art Ross race earlier in the evening, McDavid had 1-1-2 in Salt Lake City. The Oilers captain has had at least two points in each of the six games he’s played against Utah.

In fact, McDavid leads the NHL in more than just points, ranking first in rush chances, slot passes, controlled entries and end-to-end rushes. Whether or not he wins his fourth Hart Trophy will be up to the voters from the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, and that award is very much open for interpretation.

But there’s no doubt who the best player in the game is, year in year out.
