Masters Boss Urges Action on Golf Ball Distance

Masters Chairman Fred Ridley delivered his strongest words yet about regulating golf ball distance, supporting a new proposal to implement testing standards by January 2030.

Fred Ridley, chairman of the Masters Tournament and Augusta National Golf Club, emphasized the need for golf's governing bodies to address the increasing distance modern golf balls are traveling. 'I want to reemphasize that support and affirm our position as the USGA and R&A represent their collective obligation as custodians of the game,' Ridley said during his annual 'State of the Masters' address.

The new proposal calls for a universal start date of January 1, 2030, for a testing rule that could reduce driving distances by 15 yards for elite players. Ridley noted that Augusta National has already lengthened its course by 440 yards since 2002, but many classic courses lack the resources to make similar modifications. 'Unfortunately, many courses, including some iconic venues, do not have that option,' he added.
