The Russian‑born Potapova, now representing Austria, has shocked the WTA by reaching the Madrid Open semi‑finals as a lucky loser and could meet teenager Mirra Andreeva in the final.

Potapova entered the tournament after losing in qualifying, yet has upset Elena Rybakina, Karolina Pliskova and Jelena Ostapenko to become the first lucky loser to reach a WTA 1000 semi‑final. A win over Marta Kostyuk would set up a final against 19‑year‑old Mirra Andreeva, who recently beat Potapova in Linz. The pair have met five times, with Andreeva leading 3‑1.
