Uganda got off to a hot start at the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (U-17 AFCON) on Wednesday with a dominant 3-0 victory over DR Congo in Morocco.

The emphatic triumph sees the victors move joint top of Group B on three points alongside Ivory Coast, who defeated Cameroon 2-0 in the group’s earlier fixture. Uganda, however, made a loud statement of their own with a composed and disciplined performance on both ends of the pitch.

After a balanced first half hour with neither side able to break through, Uganda finally found the breakthrough in the 37th minute. Forward Owen Mukisa rose highest inside the box to power home a superb header from a delightful delivery by Trevor Mubiru, sending the Ugandan bench into celebration.

Uganda continued to grow in confidence after taking the lead and doubled their advantage deep into first-half added time. This time, Nicholas Kawooya nodded home from a well-delivered corner by captain Owen Mukisa to hand the Cubs a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

DR Congo returned from halftime with renewed urgency and pressed aggressively in search of a quick response. However, the Cubs defence stood tall throughout the second period, with goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi producing a composed display whenever called upon.

The Congolese thought they had pulled one back in the 71st minute, but their celebrations were cut short after the goal was ruled out for offside. The leaders were later reduced to ten men in the 80th minute when Trevor Mubiru received a second yellow card for deliberate handball. Despite the setback, the Cubs responded in perfect fashion just a minute later with Abdulshakur Babi’s strike.

Uganda will now turn their attention to their second Group B encounter against Cameroon, while DR Congo will face Ivory Coast in the other group fixture as the race for qualification intensifies in Morocco.

The pots for the 12th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (U-20WWC) have been revealed ahead of the group draws, with Nigeria’s Falconets placed in the highest pot of any African country heading into Poland.

The draw ceremony is set to take place this Friday at the EC1 Cultural Centre in Łódź, Poland.

Nigeria, Benin Republic, Ghana, and Tanzania emerged over the weekend as Africa’s four flag-bearers for the 24-nation tournament, which will be staged from September 5th–27th in the Polish cities of Łódź, Katowice, Sosnowiec, and Bielsko-Biała.

All 24 qualified teams have been divided into four pots of six teams each, which will eventually form six groups of four.

Pot assignments

Nigeria, who are ever-present in the competition, have been placed in Pot 2 alongside the USA, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Ghana—making their eighth appearance—will be in Pot 3 with South Korea, England, Argentina, China, and Italy.

Europe’s flag will be flown by hosts Poland, France, Italy, England, Portugal, and Spain, while China, South Korea, Japan, and North Korea represent Asia. North and Central America will be represented by Mexico, the USA, and Costa Rica; Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, and Colombia will fly South America’s flag; and New Zealand and New Caledonia will represent the Oceania region.

L’Égypte a entamé sa campagne lors de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations, CAN U17 2026 sur une note mitigée. Les Pharaons cadets ont été tenus en échec (0-0) par une vaillante équipe éthiopienne ce mercredi, lors de la première journée du tournoi organisé au Maroc. Un résultat décevant pour les Égyptiens, largement dominants mais incapables de concrétiser leurs nombreuses occasions.

Malgré une possession et un volume de jeu largement à leur avantage, les coéquipiers du sélectionneur Hussein Abdel Latif ont buté sur une défense éthiopienne bien organisée et un gardien inspiré. Le poteau a même sauvé l’Éthiopie à plusieurs reprises, tandis que l’Égypte a vu deux de ses tentatives dont une frappe puissante d’Abdulaziz Khaled à la 51e minute, terminer leur course sur le bois. Ahmed Safwat a eu la plus belle opportunité en première période pour l’Égypte, se présentant seul face au mais après une erreur défensive du camp adverse, sans parvenir à ouvrir le score. En toute fin de rencontre, Mohamed Jamal a également été stoppé par un arrêt décisif du port éthiopien.

Dans le temps additionnel, les deux bancs ont réclamé l’intervention de la VAR pour des situations litigieuses dans la surface, sans que l’arbitre ne désigne de pénalité. Un match frustrant pour l’Égypte.

Malgré le score vierge, l’un des cadets des Pharaons est particulièrement brillant. Le milieu offensif Ahmed Safwat a été élu Homme du Match récompensant sa performance complète, son activité incessante et sa capacité à créer le danger tout au long de la rencontre. Un trophée mérité qui offre un peu de positif à l’Égypte dans un match où l’efficacité a cruellement manqué.
