Greensburg and Lawrenceburg opened the action at Sectional 29 at South Dearborn. Greensburg jumped out to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter and led 33-18 at the half en route to the 63-45 victory against the Tigers.
The Pirates improve to 12-13 on the season and will take on Batesville (18-4) in the 6 p.m. sectional semifinal Friday. Lawrenceburg ends the season 7-18.
A 3-pointer by Lawrenceburg’s Trevor Fricke opened the scoring in the game. Greensburg answered with a layup by Ethan Smith. A rebound bucket by Zayden Miller had the Pirates in front 4-3.
With the game knotted at 5-5, Jacoby Miller hit a 3-pointer for the Pirates. Max Buening followed with a 3-pointer and Hayden Ramsey’s 3-pointer closed the first eight minutes with the Pirates leading 14-5.
A pair of Jonah Hellmich for the Pirates opened the second quarter. Kaleb Cole’s bucket got Lawrenceburg on the board. Logan Simpson hit a 3-pointer and Hellmich followed with a bucket to push Greensburg’s lead to 21-7.
After a Cole 3-pointer for Lawrenceburg, Greensburg’s Hellmich slammed a dunk to push the lead to 23-10. Lawrenceburg cut the deficit to 10 points on a traditional three-point play by Evan Lewis.
With Greensburg leading 27-15, the Tigers scored three points to get the deficit below double digits. The Pirates closed the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers by Buening and Jacoby Miller to lead 33-18 at the half.
A layup by Lawrenceburg’s Fricke opened the third quarter. Buening connected on a 3-pointer to get the Pirates going. After a bucket by Lewis for the Tigers, Greensburg went on a 9-0 run.
A layup by Smith started the run and a dunk by Buening capped it with the Pirates leading 45-22. A 3-pointer by Lawrenceburg’s Landen Nagele stopped the run. A Hellmich rebound put back closed the third quarter with the Pirates on top 47-25.
A steal and layup by Greensburg’s Zayden Miller opened the fourth quarter. After five points from the Tigers, Hellmich scored for the Pirates. Cole followed with a pair of free throws. After two free throws by Smith for Greensburg, Buening found Hellmich for another dunk and a 55-32 lead.
Lawrenceburg put together a 10-2 run with a bucket by Lewis cutting the deficit to 57-42. In the final two minutes, Greensburg outscored the Tigers 6-3 with four coming from Adam Powers as the Pirates closed the 63-45 victory.
For the Pirates, Buening finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Hellmich added 12 points and six rebounds. Jacoby Miller tallied 10 points and five rebounds. Smith had nine points, two rebounds and four assists. Ramsey finished with five points, one rebound and two assists. Zayden Miller had four points, four rebounds and four assists. Adam Powers scored four points. Simpson added three points, one rebound and three assists.
Lawrenceburg was led in scoring by Cole with 18 points and Fricke with 10 points.
Jennings County (11-13) defeated Franklin County 54-46 in the opening round Tuesday. The Panthers will face host South Dearborn (17-5) in the second semifinal Friday.
