Lou Holtz, best known as a successful collegiate football coach at schools like Notre Dame and South Carolina, had golf as his second passion. The 89-year-old, who died Wednesday, was a single-digit handicapper, hosted the SiriusXM show "Holtz in One," and was a member at Augusta National, where he won the member-member in 2005, calling it his greatest accomplishment.
Holtz's golf journey began in 1962 when William & Mary made him golf coach to boost his $300 salary, despite not knowing how to keep score. He developed friendships with golfers including Lee Trevino and famously recalled being bumped from the 1986 Sports Illustrated cover by Jack Nicklaus after his historic Masters win.
